What is GDM?
Here is a wonderful video prepared by the Irish Health Research Board to help you understand what gestational diabetes is and why it is important. There are a couple of things that we want you to keep in mind when you watch the video.
- In Ireland, only some women are screened for GDM. In Canada, ALL pregnant women are screened for GDM.
- When we talk about GDM, we often talk about ‘blood sugar.’ This refers to ‘glucose’ which is the molecule that carries the energy that we use for all the functions of our body. Healthy sources of ‘sugar’ are the healthy carbs and fruits we discuss in detail in other sections. In the video, sugar is illustrated as sugar cubes- but we don’t want you to eat sugar cubes! It is just a way to help you understand GDM.
